ITHACA, NY – Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH) will be conducting a full-scale disaster drill on Saturday, June 15th, from 9 AM until around noon. This drill, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) every three years, will simulate the crash landing of a commercial airliner with mass casualties.

The exercise is designed to test the effectiveness of first responders and local emergency plans, involving Airport Fire Rescue along with our mutual aid agencies. While the drill will include realistic elements such as smoke, fire, and injuries, it is crucial for the public to understand that this is only a drill.

“We want to ensure our community that this is a planned exercise to enhance our preparedness and response capabilities,” said Josh Nalley, Fire Chief/Airport Deputy Director. “Please do not be alarmed by the presence of multiple emergency vehicles or the simulated emergency activities at the airport.”

Members of the public are advised not to be alarmed and to refrain from needlessly calling 9-1-1 during the drill. This exercise is a vital component of the airport’s commitment to safety and emergency readiness. All airport operations will continue as usual, ensuring this drill will not affect any scheduled commercial flights.
